Women in Web3 - Issue #41
Welcome to Women in Web3! I’m Carly from Weld Recruiting and this is the 41st edition of our weekly get-down!
This week I got to sit at a round table of visionaries (thanks to internet supporter turned IRL friend, Michael Bresler). We talked about Web3, AI, conscious leadership, mental health… and a heck ton more over two amazing days. I got to pop over to the Empire State building to be part of a creator panel at the LinkedIn office (shout out to Cayman Rojas for organizing). I saw myself present on screen in the TANGRA metaverse for Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED) on how to get a job in web3 (thanks to the incredible Nelly Tacheva). And as I’m sitting here typing this out, I’m getting ready to walk over to the United Nations for the IRL version of WED that is focused on Women in Web3.
All in a New York minute. Wild.
Specifically what’s wild is the fact that a year and a half ago, I knew nothing about Web3.
I came at it from the artist perspective, and my attempt to turn my portrait paintings into NFTs was honestly a big flop. (Shout out to my sister who was the only one to buy one!)
Despite that, Matthew McSpadden at Weld Recruiting encouraged me to keep learning, and to do that by taking action. (a la the Women in Web3 podcast and newsletter you are reading.)
Something I told the people at that round table was what I am most excited for in the next 5 years, and I want to share it with you too:
The ways that Web3 is leveling the playing field and giving opportunity to those who put the time in.
If I hadn’t just dove in headfirst, started trying, started learning, and took the time to make new connections in the space, that first paragraph would still be about the birds chirping outside my window as I typed this up from my couch. (No shade – that is generally where I write this every other week.)
The point is, now is the time to carve out a space for yourself in this space. It moves at lightning speed, and you have no idea where you might end up in 6 months, one year, a year and a half. You just have to be willing to accept the risk and embrace the unknown.
Like everything in life, it’s up and down. The journey is hardly ever linear. It feels like adversity is abundant right now for this industry. But for those who stick around and build and find a way to persevere?
There’s no telling where they’ll be and what they’ll be doing a year and a half from now.
I hope you have the courage and feel supported enough to be one of those people if that’s what you want. I believe in you!
